Plot summary
Alan Trent and Gerald Shannon, friends since boyhood, both love Kitty Vane, and she has cared for Alan all along. When the two men are drafted into the war, they return home for ten days, and Alan proposes; Kitty accepts, and Gerald gives the couple his blessing. The engagement is only a day old when the men are ordered back to the front. Kitty and Alan look for someone to marry them, but there is no time, so they agree to spend the night together instead. The next day, Lawrence, Kitty's cousin, jokes with Alan about the room they took, and Gerald, taking it for proof of an affair, comes to believe that Alan has been unfaithful to Kitty.
