Plot summary
A story Mike Reese writes and then publishes, breaking his promise to withhold it, leads to the killing of a witness due to testify against a local mobster. The big-city daily he works for fires him, and no other paper will hire him. The mobster, Carl Durham, is grateful for the story and pays him off. Reese leaves the city for the small town of Lakeville and uses the money to buy a half-interest in The Lakeville Sentinel, which Catherine Harris owns. The two disagree at once about how the paper should be run. Reese means to use the Sentinel as a step up for himself.
