Forrest J. Ackerman
Biography
Forrest J Ackerman was a Los Angeles-based editor, author, and literary agent central to science fiction fandom. He edited and largely wrote Famous Monsters of Filmland from 1958 to 1983, a magazine that taught young readers about horror, fantasy, and science fiction movies. Through his agency he represented writers such as Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov. He supplied the name Vampirella for a comic-book character and wrote that character's origin tale, coined the nickname sci-fi, and in 1953 was voted the number one fan personality by the World Science Fiction Society, an honor that came with a Hugo Award. His acting credits stretched from the 1950s into the 21st century and included The Time Travelers (1964), Dracula vs. Frankenstein (1971), The Aftermath (1982), Scalps (1983), Amazon Women on the Moon (1987), and The Wizard of Speed and Time (1988). Later honors included lifetime achievement awards from the Bram Stoker Awards in 1996 and the World Fantasy Awards in 2002.
