Plot summary
A nuclear war that also used biological weapons has transformed the planet. Three astronauts come home from a long mission, and their craft crashes on landing, killing one of them. The survivors, Newman and Mathews, meet mutants on the way to Los Angeles and find the city destroyed, with renegade gangs and mutants holding control. They take shelter in an abandoned mansion. Newman finds a boy named Chris hiding in a museum with a curator, who is suffering from radiation poisoning, and Newman takes the boy under his care. On a supply run, Sarah crosses their path, pursued by bandits under Cutter's command.

- The Aftermath was seized and confiscated in the UK under Section 3 of the Obscene Publications Act 1959 during the video nasty panic, although its makers were never prosecuted for obscenity.
- Steve Barkett showed Roger Corman a rough cut of The Aftermath hoping New World Pictures would pick it up; Corman's reaction was mixed, and on his suggestion Barkett redid several effects shots and cut 15 minutes to improve the pacing.
- Barkett first tried to make The Aftermath with actor Stanley Livingston, but they dissolved their partnership when they could not get financial backing. A second try with Jim Danforth ended in an amicable split over creative control; Danforth still painted the poster and played Williams.
- In 1977 a producer bought The Aftermath and hired Barkett to direct, but the project collapsed over conflicts with the director of photography and the producer's insistence on renaming it Invasion of the Mutant People.
