Plot summary
Six college archaeology students work a dig in the California desert, searching for artifacts. A professor and an elderly Native American warn the group away from the Indian burial ground on the site, but the students dig there anyway. Opening that ground frees the evil spirit of Black Claw, a vengeful Native American spirit. The spirit takes hold of one member of the group and possesses that student.

- Ray said he handed his distributor, 21st Century, the trims and outs of his cut, and their "improved" version stretched a lion's-head shot meant for one or two seconds and cut in glimpses of the killer Indian before he had appeared in the story.
- Fred Olen Ray said Scalps was meant to be the cheapest film possible, describing it as "6 Kids, a Station Wagon and a Tent".
