Plot summary
E. V. Marshall, known as Marsh, is employed by Ralph Nevins, a rich real-estate businessman, and is carrying on an affair with Nevins's wife, Paulie. Marsh wants her to divorce her husband, but Paulie was raised in poverty and will not surrender his money. One night the pair listen in on thieves who are planning to rob a doctor named Lynbury of his jewelry. They say nothing to the police, afraid that Ralph will learn they were together. Paulie returns home to an assault by her husband, who has figured out about the affair. Ralph informs his secretary, Kathy Stevens, of a plan to take Paulie on a trip and to let Marsh run the company while he is away. Paulie, ready to do anything to escape the marriage, presses Marsh to take the jewels from the thieves instead.

- Elizabeth Montgomery was cast as Kathy Stevens in The Scarlet Hour, but her father's demands with the studio got her dismissed; Michael Curtiz then saw Jody Lawrance on Fireside Theater and offered her the part.
- Filming of The Scarlet Hour was completed within weeks, but its release was delayed by several months over a last-minute title change from Too Late My Love to The Scarlet Hour; advertising and re-advertising after the name change cost roughly $2 million.
- Lauren Bacall was initially cast as Pauline Nevins but left The Scarlet Hour, and Barbara Stanwyck was then cast before leaving to do another film. The studio then tested Carol Ohmart and Carroll Baker, and Jack Palance was considered for Marsh before Tom Tryon was chosen.
