Plot summary
Four astronauts, Captain Theo Cooper, Dr. Emily McTier, Bug Kieslowski and Cole Dvorak, begin a 400-day simulation on Earth designed to measure the psychological strain of long space travel. Their quarters stand in for a ship on a distant planet, and the months underground wear them down: paranoia and hallucinations set in, and each of them retreats further into a separate space. Then a disheveled stranger enters the simulated ship, and the unsettled crew decides to open the hatch and explore the surface for themselves. They step out into a dark, windy, dust-covered world that shows none of the life they left behind.
