Plot summary
In Portland, Oregon, Earl Brooks runs a respected company and leads a second life as a serial killer. Police know him as the Thumbprint Killer because he leaves the victims' bloody thumbprints behind, and his targets are young couples. A voice in his head, Marshall, argues for the killings. Brooks attends AA meetings to keep the urge in check. His daughter Jane arrives home from college, saying she has dropped out, and asks for work at his company. Detective Tracy Atwood has chased the Thumbprint Killer for years while handling a divorce and the escape of a criminal she once jailed. Then a man who calls himself Mister Smith, holding photographs of a murder, demands to come along on the next one.

- Mr. Brooks opened in 2,453 theaters and took $10,017,067, an average of $4,083 per theater, ranking fourth at the North American box office. It finished with $28,549,298 at home and $19,572,602 abroad, $48,121,900 worldwide, above its $20 million budget.
- On the director's commentary Bruce Evans said the film was meant to be the first of a trilogy, though that depended on profits, and despite its commercial success no further films are planned. Speaking in April 2009, Panabaker said everybody wanted to make a trilogy and that she and Costner would still love to.

Evans revealed that the third film would have found Brooks and Jane at odds with one another and would have ended with Brooks killing both himself and his daughter, having realized there was no hope for either of them.- Ramin Djawadi composed the score for Mr. Brooks, whose soundtrack also features the song "Vicious Traditions" by The Veils, and he was nominated for the World Soundtrack Award in the Discovery of the Year category in 2007.
