Plot summary
Casey Morrow is drinking his way through London with no money and no place to go when Phyllis Brunner, a young heiress, offers him a large sum if he will marry her. He agrees without asking many questions. The next morning he wakes in another woman's apartment with his coat soaked in blood, and Phyllis's father has been killed with a fire poker. To clear his name Morrow has to work out what happened that night. The effort brings him into encounters with a string of suspicious characters, and the more he learns from them, the worse his position seems to become.

- Script supervisor Renee Glynne said Belinda Lee was so inexperienced on Murder by Proxy that she had to correct her constantly, and that Dane Clark, who fancied Lee, got nasty and pushed Glynne away from the actress during filming.
- Murder by Proxy was the first of an eight-picture deal between Hammer and Lippert Productions, signed on Sept. 24, 1954.
