Plot summary
The documentary presents Al Gore's illustrated talk on climate. He delivers the lecture to an audience in a Los Angeles theater, using graphs, flow charts and visuals: carbon dioxide readings from the Mauna Loa Observatory, evidence from Antarctic ice cores, and before-and-after photographs of glaciers shrinking. Pictures of the Earth taken on space missions, among them Earthrise and The Blue Marble, show how the planet came to be seen. An animated clip explains the greenhouse effect. Gore makes the case that warming is not a political question but a moral one, and sets out the consequences he believes will follow if greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced.

- A judge ruled that An Inconvenient Truth contained nine scientific errors and must therefore be accompanied by an explanation of those errors before being shown to school children, saying that showing the film without them would be a violation of education laws.
- An Inconvenient Truth won Best Documentary Feature and Best Original Song, for Melissa Etheridge's "I Need to Wake Up", at the 79th Academy Awards. It is the first documentary to win two Oscars and the first to win a best original song Oscar.
- Davis Guggenheim said he asked Al Gore why climate change was "so hard for people to grasp", and Gore replied, "Because it's an inconvenient truth, ya know." Guggenheim said that in the back of his head he thought, that's the title of our movie.
- The film inspired producer Kevin Wall to conceive the 2007 Live Earth festival and influenced Italian composer Giorgio Battistelli to write an operatic adaptation, entitled CO2, which premiered at La Scala in Milan in 2015.
- University of Oregon professor Grant Jacobsen found, in a 2011 paper in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, that in the two months following the film's release zip codes within ten miles of a zip code where it was shown saw a 50 percent relative increase in the purchase of voluntary carbon offsets.
- Although the bulk of the film was shot on 4:4:4 HDCAM, with four Sony F950 HDCAMs used for the presentation, director Davis Guggenheim also used 35mm, 16mm, three different kinds of prosumer HD, and 8mm film of the farm that he shot himself.
