Plot summary
At breakfast, the Kilbournes' butler, Grosvenor, reports that the family silver has gone, taken by Ambrose, the latest tramp Emily Kilbourne had installed as chauffeur. Emily swears off rescuing destitute men, to the relief of the household. That same morning, Wade Rawlins arrives at the door to use the telephone, his broken-down car having rolled off a cliff, and Emily promptly appoints him the new chauffeur over the protests of Grosvenor and her daughters, Jerry and Marion. Housed in the servants' quarters, Rawlins is overheard talking to himself and taken for crazy. When Henry Kilbourne comes home, he orders that Emily's latest tramp be sent away in the morning. Emily ignores every attempt to remove him.
