Plot summary
Joe Greer is a champion of auto racing. He goes back to his hometown for an exhibition race, and his younger brother Eddie is in the field, hoping to win a title of his own. Joe is obsessed with protecting Eddie from women, so he interferes in Eddie's relationship with Anne. Joe also makes his longtime girlfriend Lee feel she is not good enough to be around Eddie. The interference leaves Joe estranged from Eddie and from Lee. The story is loosely based on a play about carnival life, and professional racing drivers of the era took part in the racing sequences.

- Joan Blondell and Ann Dvorak were originally cast in each other's roles in The Crowd Roars, but the two actresses swapped parts after only a few days of shooting.
