Plot summary
At Town Hall in New York in 1967, drag performers gather for the Miss All-America Camp Beauty Contest, and the film follows them through rehearsals and dressing rooms. Jack, a 24-year-old gay man, hosts as Flawless Sabrina. Judges score the contestants on walk and talk, bathing suit, gown, makeup and hairdo, with beauty counting for ten points. Jack's protégé, Rachel Harlow, is among the entrants, as is Crystal LaBeija. Between numbers the contestants talk about sexual identity, sex reassignment surgery and what it means to be a drag queen. Emore DuBois describes a draft notice she received and the military's refusal to take her, which came down to her feminine appearance, though she had wanted to serve.
