Plot summary
Roy Lichtenstein's early career runs on commercial jobs, from window displays to sheet metal designs and architectural drawing, filling the gaps between his own projects. In his Long Island studio he builds an elaborate composition, one of four canvases on the theme The Artist's Studio, planning it through drawings where, he says, most of his thinking happens. Talking with the critic Lawrence Alloway, he weighs how Pop Art relates to the collage, Dada and Purism before it, and what separates his paintings from those of Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg. His Ben-Day dots and comic-derived images, he explains, project emotion into sanitized commercial symbols.
