Andrew Tombes
Biography
Andrew Tombes was an American character actor and comedian who spent years on the vaudeville stage before finding success in Broadway comedies and, later, in films. He grew up in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of a grocer, and was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy. By December 1914 he had taken part in the top-billed act at the opening of Kansas City's Orpheum Theatre. From 1917 he worked steadily in Broadway revues and comedies, among them Miss 1917, Poor Little Ritz Girl in 1920, the Ziegfeld Follies of 1922 and 1927, and Tip-Toes in 1925. His first screen appearances came in 1933, when he was nearing 50, and he went on to make roughly 150 films for a variety of studios.
