Almira Sessions

Biography

Almira Sessions was an American character actress who worked in theater, film and television, accumulating more than 500 screen and television credits over a career that stretched across much of the 20th century. Born in Washington, D.C., she was a debutante who entered acting with the Aborn Opera Company in a 1909 comic operetta, then moved into vaudeville, cabaret singing and New York stage work, including Bob Hope's radio show. Her film debut came with Wayward in 1932, and she began appearing regularly in features in 1940 with Little Nellie Kelly. She was known for comedy, and her performance as Hattie the cook in My Kingdom for a Cook drew notice. Her later films included Sullivan's Travels (1941), The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944), Monsieur Verdoux (1947), The Bishop's Wife (1947) and Willard (1971). She continued to work into her 80s and stepped back from acting shortly before she died in 1974.

A role that slipped away
Sessions was with the Aborn Opera Company at the National Theatre in Washington, D. C. She refused to wear tights in the chorus of It Happened in Nordland, and newspapers across the United States printed the story of her rebellion.
A change of course
During World War I, Sessions left entertainment to work as a typist for the War Risk Bureau in Washington, D.C., then transferred to the French Commission as an interpreter until the war ended.
