Plot summary
By 2041 much of North America has become desert, and the United States belongs to a bloc called North Hemi. To survive, North Hemi builds mini-megs, small versions of the giant scorpion-shaped mega-robots. Only one MRAS-2 works, and Captain Drake and his copilot Stumpy use it for tours and supply runs. Raiders attack the machine on an expedition, and Drake's boss Rooney orders him to show its weapons to General Wa-Lee and his aide Chou-Sing, visitors from the Eastern Alliance negotiating to buy the mini-meg line. Archaeologist Leda Fanning, traveling on the MRAS-2 to meet her journalist friend Annie, is angered by the battle. Leda and Annie look into suspicious activity around Crystal Vista, an abandoned but well-kept 20th-century town.
