SPOILER
The climactic scene, in which Utena becomes a pink sports car that Anthy drives to escape Ohtori Academy, met resistance from the film's staff, director Kunihiko Ikuhara said; he wanted a climax that would make the film memorable and unlike other action-dramas.- Animators who specialized in mecha anime were hired for the final car chase of Adolescence of Utena, and director Kunihiko Ikuhara noted that several of them were initially confused about why they had been hired to work on an Utena film.
- Adolescence of Utena was not centrally storyboarded; it was split among five storyboarders who each supervised a segment, with Takuya Igarashi, a storyboard artist on the TV series, handling "part A".
- The opening title sequence of Adolescence of Utena was made by modifying digital graphics through nonlinear composite editing on a supercomputer, a process that was relatively new for animation at the time.
- According to director Kunihiko Ikuhara, the staff of Adolescence of Utena were divided over whether to openly depict or only imply a kiss between Utena and Anthy; the kiss was included at his decision.
