Plot summary

Edo-period Japan. The Yamashiro clan works a hidden gold mine and pays the Shogun of the Dark for protection with the ore it digs. That lord intends to arm himself with Spanish weapons and topple the Tokugawa Shogunate. A storm drives the gold ship aground on Mochizuki land, and the Eight Devils of Kimon, ninjas with supernatural powers, slaughter Shimoda Village to keep the cargo quiet. Their attack leaves Kagero, a Kōga kunoichi, the only survivor of her team, and Tessai carries her off. Jubei Kibagami, a masterless swordsman, steps in.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Ninja Scroll (1993)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Ninja Scroll was originally planned as two 45-minute films, and the storyboard was written that way, which is why the finished film has climax scenes in both its first and second halves.
  • In 1995 the BBFC cut about 52 seconds from the UK release of Ninja Scroll, removing a sexual assault scene and images of throwing stars; those cuts were waived for the 2004 10th Anniversary release.
  • After Ninja Scroll was screened on SBS in 1997, former Attorney-General Philip Ruddock controversially appealed the film's original classification and successfully had it upgraded to R18+ with no cuts.
  • Ninja Scroll is credited, alongside Akira and Ghost in the Shell, with increasing the popularity of adult-oriented anime outside Japan, and The Wachowskis cited it as an influence on the Matrix franchise; Yoshiaki Kawajiri later contributed to two segments of The Animatrix.
  • The film's swordsman hero Jubei is loosely based on the historical figure Yagyū Jūbei Mitsuyoshi, and the story and style of Ninja Scroll were influenced by the works of novelist Futaro Yamada and by Western spy fiction.
