Plot summary
The city of Edge rises beside the ruins of Midgar, two years after Sephiroth's defeat. Cloud Strife, who fought him, runs a courier service with Tifa Lockhart and helps raise the orphan Denzel and Barret Wallace's adopted daughter Marlene. Cloud keeps his distance from his friends, and he carries Geostigma, the incurable disease that afflicts many of Edge's people. Rufus Shinra, the former president of the Shinra Company, is ill as well, and asks Cloud to stop Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo, three silver-haired strangers who are gathering children infected with Geostigma. Denzel is drawn to the strangers by their promise of a cure. Cloud turns Rufus down and leaves.

- Korean singer Ivy's 2007 music video for "Sonata of Temptation" recreated the Tifa-versus-Loz fight from the film. Its director, Hong Jung-ho, called it a parody made without Square Enix's permission; the company sued for 160,000,000 KRW and a Seoul court ruled it plagiarism in April 2008.
- Advent Children began as a short film at Square's CGI studio Visual Works, and Kazushige Nojima, who wrote the Final Fantasy VII game script, was hired to write a 20-minute script; he chose "a story about Cloud and Tifa and the kids".
- Early in pre-production the team considered making Advent Children a video game, but Nomura decided against it partly because Visual Works had never made a full game; the creators had no film experience and fell back on their knowledge of in-game movies.
- The staff found the game's Final Fantasy VII designs impossible to translate directly to film, so some identifying features were dropped; Cloud Strife's final look was a combination of eight different designs, from his super deformed game appearance to his realistic film one.
- For the extended Advent Children Complete, the Japanese and English casts returned to record new dialogue, and Nomura said Sakurai and Morikawa already knew their characters; but Denzel and Marlene were recast because the original voices sounded too mature.
- Gaming sites Gamasutra and Kotaku credited Advent Children Complete as one of the main reasons sales of the PlayStation 3 console radically increased during the film's first week of release.
- Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama said the film showed "battles that have not been achievable in FF so far", so he designed the game's battle system to create cinematic battles like Advent Children's.
- The team deliberately stopped worrying about realistic fight choreography, which they felt would limit the film's "cool look", and worked by their "own rules"; motion capture was used for many battles, with physically impossible maneuvers built digitally.
