Plot summary
Bullied and ostracized as a child for her lazy eye, May Canady now works as a veterinary assistant and still finds it hard to connect with people socially, though glasses and corrective lenses have repaired the eye. Her mother gave her a doll named Suzie, sealed in glass, with the advice that if she could not find a friend she should make one, and that Suzie must never leave the case. May treats Suzie as her only true friend. She becomes infatuated with Adam, a mechanic whose hands she finds especially attractive, introduces herself, and they begin to date. Her colleague Polly, who gives her a cat named Lupe, also shows an interest in her.
