Plot summary
El Maestro wants the students in his Chicano studies class at a small-town junior college to fight the injustices their community faces, but the class keeps shrinking and nobody listens. They would rather party on Cinco de Mayo, and except for Magdalena, his star pupil, they laugh at his old-fashioned ideas about Chicanos and activism. He organizes a Cinco de Mayo protest over racially motivated violence against Mexican immigrants, including flag burning and an unsolved murder. Dean Liberstein blocks the event, calls El Maestro a racist radical and a troublemaker, declares his life's work obsolete and fires him. Worried about his state of mind, the Dean refers him to Dr. Harry Love, a psychiatrist.
