Plot summary
In 1974 Philadelphia, Jim Ellis, a college-educated former competitive swimmer, is struggling to find work and takes a job at the run-down Marcus Foster Recreation Center. His assignment is to prepare the building for foreclosure, which puts him at odds with Elston, the janitor who stands to lose his job. Jim clears out and refills the center's neglected pool, then lets a group of neighborhood teenagers swim in it. Andre, Hakim, Reggie, Puddin Head and Walt have real ability in the water, and Jim begins coaching them, though Hakim's sister Sue, who is raising him, wants him in school before he is in the pool. With Elston's help, Jim sets out to enter the city's first all-black team, the PDR team, in competition, where racist opposition awaits.
