Plot summary
Daniels wins the mayor's office and Turnely the district attorney's, both having promised to break the city's criminal rackets. Matty, one of the city's gangsters, arranges the murder of Turnely, and attorney Gerald I. Latimer is named special prosecutor. Gerald stages arrests of small-time operators. Eddie Wright, a restaurateur long harassed by racketeers, goes to the mayor's house to press him for action, and his presence alarms Mrs. Daniels, who calls the police. A bomb in the mayor's car kills Daniels. The police detain Eddie, but Gordon McKay, who runs the city crime lab, keeps working the case with his assistant, Jane Mitchell.
