Plot summary
A magazine feature writer, George Mack, travels to the Taos region of New Mexico to report on the Penitentes, a Catholic sect whose rites include self-flagellation. He takes a cabin and brings in Chico, a Penitente boy, to work as his houseboy, and he tours Modado, a village known as a center of the cult. The missionary Dr. Robert Taylor calls on Raquel, who once belonged to the sect and was Chico's sweetheart. She is afraid, because the Penitentes judge her posing for Manuel, a rich artist, to be immoral, and Chico, learning she is sitting for nude studies, threatens her. Documentary footage of the Penitentes' flagellation rites is mixed with the story of a killing in New Mexico.
