Plot summary
Boston gathers for the 2013 Patriots Day marathon. Patrick Downes and Jessica Kensky come to watch it, Steve Woolfenden brings his young son Leo, and Officer Sean Collier visits a friend at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Two bombs explode near the finish line. Sergeant Tommy Saunders and other first responders pull the wounded to safety. FBI agent Richard Deslauriers sets up an investigation with Commissioner Ed Davis at the Black Falcon Terminal, and Watertown Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese's officers begin their own checks. Saunders, who hurt his knee making an arrest the day before, keeps working the case. He goes home to his wife Carol and vows to find those responsible.

- Watertown residents objected to Patriots Day recreating the 2013 shootout between police and the Tsarnaev brothers on Laurel Street, so town officials denied permission; the City of Malden stood in, and ended up with eight locations in the film.
- MIT, where the Tsarnaev brothers killed Officer Sean Collier, allowed Peter Berg's production to shoot only "entirely peaceful scenes" on campus for three days in June; filming also took place at Collier's actual house.
- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth refused the production permission to shoot on its campus because chancellor Gerry Kavanaugh believed it would be too disruptive; Emmanuel College stood in for exterior shots of UMass Dartmouth.
