Frans Balder built Firefall for the National Security Agency, a program that can reach the world's nuclear launch codes, and now he wants it gone. He hires the hacker Lisbeth Salander to take it back from the agency's servers; she gets in, but the program will not open. Edwin Needham, an NSA security expert, traces the breach and flies to Stockholm. Masked men led by Jan Holtser raid Lisbeth's apartment, shoot her and carry Firefall away, and Balder, who misses their meeting, believes she kept it.
