Plot summary
Vee Delmonico is a high school senior on Staten Island. She wants to go away to college, but the cost and the thought of leaving her mother, Nancy, by herself hold her back, and the two of them are still grieving her older brother. Sydney, a friend who plays Nerve, pushes Vee to join the online game, where users sign on as players or pay to watch and dares pay out cash and a place in the final. Vee enrolls and is given her first task: kiss a stranger. She picks Ian at a diner, learns he is playing too, and the watchers send the pair into Manhattan for the next dare.

- The directors aimed for a PG-13 rating: Schulman said they wanted to make sure younger teenagers could see it, and Joost was not interested in making a gross torture movie, so they axed a “sex dare” that was ultimately just too dark and weird.
