Plot summary
Rodney Baze is an Iraq War veteran back in North Braddock, Pennsylvania, and ordinary work at the mill does not hold him. He bets at a horse racing simulcast and loses, and the money he wagered came from John Petty, a bar owner who also runs illegal games. His older brother Russell, a steel mill worker, goes to Petty, hands over part of the debt, and promises the remainder. Driving home drunk, Russell strikes another car and kills the people inside; he is sent to prison for vehicular manslaughter. While he serves his time, his girlfriend Lena takes up with Wesley Barnes, the North Braddock police chief. After his release Russell goes back to the mill, and Rodney, tired of small purses, asks Petty for a bigger fight.

- Christian Bale wore a tattoo of Braddock's ZIP code, 15104, on his neck as an homage to the town's then-mayor, now US Senator, John Fetterman, who has the same design on his arm.
- Nine people, eight of them with the surname DeGroat, the same as the lead character, sued the makers of the film, claiming it portrays a gang of "inbreds" living in the Ramapo Mountains who are "lawless, drug-addicted, impoverished and violent."
- The film began as The Low Dweller, a spec script by Brad Ingelsby with Leonardo DiCaprio and Ridley Scott attached; Rupert Sanders was set to direct in 2009 but left over scheduling. Cooper rewrote it, drawing on growing up in Appalachia and losing a sibling young, and DiCaprio and Scott stayed on as producers.
- Director Scott Cooper read an article about Braddock, Pennsylvania, a declining steel industry town outside Pittsburgh, and the efforts to revitalize it led by mayor John Fetterman. After visiting, he was inspired to use the borough as the backdrop for a film.
