Plot summary
Nate Poole is a trumpet player and a recovering heroin addict. He sleeps with the wife of Happy Shannon, a gangster, and one of Happy's men drives him into the desert to kill him. Native Americans shoot the man, and Nate walks until he reaches a carnival sideshow run by Sam Adamo. There he sees Lily Luster, a woman with wings. Sam tries to kill him, and Lily drives a truck to get him away; the two then head for Reno.
