Plot summary
Carol Walker, Gillian Lieberman and Helen Halston meet in Poughkeepsie each Mother's Day, trading stories about sons who forget the day and keep them at a distance. Gillian floats the idea of dropping in on them in New York, then backs off it. Helen urges the three of them to drive down and surprise the men. Their sons Daniel, Paul and Matt grew up together and now live in the city. Carol sets about tidying Matt's apartment. Gillian turns up at Daniel's and, getting no answer, takes a room. Helen's nerve fails and she books a hotel room, telling the others she is staying with Paul. In the morning she appears at his door and meets his roommates.
