Biography
Mario Cantone is an American comedian, actor, singer, and writer who began his career hosting the children's show Steampipe Alley, seen on WWOR-TV from 1988 to 1993. Born in Boston and raised in Stoneham, Massachusetts, he became known in stand-up for impressions of performers including Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland, and Bette Davis, along with original songs. His Broadway debut came in 1995, when he took over the part of Buzz from Nathan Lane in Love! Valour! Compassion!, and that same year he appeared in The Tempest opposite Patrick Stewart. He later created the one-man Broadway show An Evening With Mario Cantone, and Laugh Whore, his second such show, earned him a Tony nomination in the best special theatrical event category. On screen he played Anthony Marentino in Sex and the City and its revival And Just Like That, Terri in Men in Trees, and voiced Mikey Abromowitz in Surf's Up (2007).

A role that slipped away
Cantone later took part in a workshop for The Lion King, playing Timon, but he was not comfortable with the makeup or with manipulating a puppet, so he eventually left the project.

In 2001, Cantone turned down the role of Carmen Ghia in Mel Brooks's The Producers, a part he had been offered that year.

Showtime recorded Cantone's Laugh Wh*re performance on December 11, 2004, and aired it as the network's first Broadway comedy special. His second one-man show had played the Cort Theatre from October 24, 2004, to January 2, 2005.
