Plot summary
A letter reaches Gideon Bell promising the Favre Emeralds will be taken at midnight. The Bat, a thief who dresses as a bat, kills him, takes the jewels and leaves the chief of police a bat-shaped note saying he is bound for the country. He drives to a mansion that Courtleigh Fleming, the Oakdale Bank president found dead in Colorado, had built. The writer Cornelia Van Gorder has rented it for the summer, and her maid Lizzie Allen sets a bear trap. Courtleigh's nephew Richard wants the lease and plots with Dr. H. E. Wells to frighten Van Gorder away. The bank's cashier, Brooks Bailey, is reported to have taken $200,000 and vanished. Van Gorder's niece, Dale Ogden, arrives with a man posing as the new gardener, and her aunt questions him about medical terms he treats as plants.
