Plot summary
Katharine Gun works as an analyst at GCHQ, the British intelligence agency, in the months before the 2003 invasion of Iraq. A memo that crosses her desk sets out an American and British plan to collect dirt on diplomats from non-permanent Security Council states, among them Cameroon, Chile, Bulgaria and Guinea, and to use it to push them toward backing a resolution for war. Angered that the country is being drawn into a war on false pretenses, she copies the document and passes it to a contact in the anti-war movement, who gives it to the activist Yvonne Ridley. In London, the Observer journalist Martin Bright receives the memo. His editors Peter Beaumont and Roger Alton weigh whether to publish it, and Martin tries to confirm that the document is genuine.
