At Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, a rare book collection holds a first edition of John James Audubon's The Birds of America. Spencer Reinhard, an art student who finds his life empty, is shown the room, and he and his friend Warren Lipka begin to consider taking the volumes. Warren travels to Amsterdam to sound out black market buyers, then reports back that the books could bring millions. The two bring in childhood friends: Eric Borsuk, who handles the planning, and Chas Allen, who will drive. Only one librarian, Betty Jean Gooch, guards the collection.
