Plot summary
It is May 1940, and German troops are moving through France. The 7th Transmission Company is caught in an air raid near the Machecoul woods and takes cover among the trees. Captain Dumont sends Louis Chaudard, Pithiviers and Tassin out to scout the area. The three bury the company's radio cable under a sandy road and settle into a cemetery on a hill, but a tree cut for camouflage in the wrong spot drags the cable back into sight. German infantry cut the line, surround the woods and take the company prisoner while the scouts watch. Cut off behind the German advance, Chaudard, Pithiviers and Tassin would rather sit out the fighting, but the French pilot Lieutenant Duvauchel presses them to break through to their own troops.

SPOILER
The film's final parachute scene is based on a true story: 58 Free French paratroopers were parachuted into Brittany in groups of three on the night of 7 June 1944 to neutralize the rail network before the Normandy landings.- The story of the lost 7th Company squad came from Robert Lamoureux's own personal experiences in June 1940 during the war.
