Plot summary
Alexandre Dupré is a confidence man who has just been released from prison early for good behavior and is back at work. He travels to Venice under the name viscount de Valombreza, planning to sell Japanese businessmen a fake Canaletto. A stranger on the plane asks him to carry a briefcase through customs for him. The stranger is murdered soon after landing: he was a physicist whose new fuel could replace oil, which had angered oil tycoons who wanted the invention. The microfilm with his formula is in the briefcase Dupré is carrying. Agents who want the invention now want the briefcase, and Dupré has to keep ahead of them.
