Plot summary
When international arms dealer Bernard Shah dies in a Paris brothel, French counter-espionage officers smuggle his corpse to his Bavarian castle in the care of Francis Lagneau, who introduces himself there as Ludo, the dead man's cousin. Shah's young widow Amaranthe is the legal owner of the patents for nuclear weaponry he left behind, and Francis has orders to obtain them for France. Three agents from other services arrive at the castle with the same goal, each in disguise: Boris, a claimed Russian stepbrother, Eusebio, a supposed Swiss priest, and Hans, a pretend German psychoanalyst. Amaranthe takes her time over what to do with herself and with the patents.
