Plot summary
In the summer of 1942, a Royal Air Force bomber loses its way over Paris and German flak brings it down. The crew plans to meet at the hammam of the Grand Mosque, then jumps, and only three of them avoid capture. Sir Reginald comes down in the Vincennes Zoo, where a friendly zookeeper hands him civilian clothes. Peter Cunningham drops onto the platform of Augustin Bouvet, a house painter, and both escape German troops; the puppet show operator Juliette gives them shelter. Alan MacIntosh drops onto the Opéra Garnier, and Stanislas Lefort, its chief conductor, helps him without enthusiasm. German troops under Major Achbach pursue the airmen and the French men and women who take them in.
