Plot summary
François Merlin writes pulp espionage novels, forty-two so far, and his publisher, Charron, presses him to deliver the next one. In the story Merlin types, he is Bob Saint-Clar, a world-renowned secret agent, and the people of his own life reappear transformed: Christine, a sociology student who lives in his building and reads his books, becomes Tatiana, the spy's lover, while the rich and vain Charron becomes Colonel Karpof, head of the Albanian secret service. Christine is fascinated by the spy of the novels, who is the opposite of the clumsy, frustrated man who writes them. Charron looks down on the writer whose books he publishes.
