Trailer

Plot summary

A high wall encloses a kingdom of knights and lasers, protected by the Institute for Elite Knights. Gloreth, the legendary heroine, founded the order a thousand years ago, after she defeated a monster and sealed the realm behind that wall. Queen Valerin wants the old rules loosened, and Ballister Boldheart, a commoner, becomes the first of his kind to be knighted. During the ceremony a laser fires from his sword and kills the Queen. Ambrosius Goldenloin, a knight and Ballister's boyfriend, disarms him, cutting off his right arm. Ballister hides and builds a prosthetic arm, and Nimona, a teenage shapeshifter shunned for her powers, seeks him out and appoints herself his sidekick.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Nimona (2023)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Nimona was 75% complete when it was canceled with the closure of Blue Sky Studios, sources told Comic Book Resources, and director Troy Quane later said it was about 70% through layout, with five fully animated sequences, character models, story reels and locations finished.
  • In March 2022 three former Blue Sky staff members said Nimona received pushback from Disney leadership over its LGBTQ themes and a same-sex kiss, as Disney faced controversy over Florida's Parental Rights in Education bill.
  • Had Blue Sky finished it, Nimona would have been the studio's first film with LGBTQ representation: staffers told BuzzFeed News the version had an "I love you" scene between Ballister Blackheart and Ambrosius Goldenloin.
  • Footage Blue Sky had already finished was shown to people in the animation business and convinced Megan Ellison at Annapurna Pictures to complete the film after it was canceled.
  • When DNEG's Montreal facilities took over animation, pipelines had to be built from scratch and the render engine was switched from Blue Sky's proprietary CGI Studio to Pixar RenderMan, working from Blue Sky's blueprint.
  • Nimona's design borrowed Eyvind Earle's fluidity and Charley Harper's geometric shapes to blend the medieval and modern worlds, and used the novel's circles for free-form Nimona, squares for traditionalist Ballister and diamonds for the rigid Institute.
