Lorraine Toussaint
Biography
Lorraine Toussaint is a Trinidadian actress who began in Shakespearean theater before film and television. She attended the High School of Performing Arts and the Juilliard School's drama division. Her screen debut came in 1983, and her film debut was Breaking In (1989) opposite Burt Reynolds. She went on to appear in Hudson Hawk (1991), Point of No Return (1993), Dangerous Minds (1995), and Black Dog (1998). On television, she starred as Rene Jackson in Any Day Now from 1998 to 2002 and played Shambala Green on Law & Order, later a regular on Saving Grace from 2007 to 2010. Middle of Nowhere (2012) brought her an Independent Spirit Award nomination and critical praise. In 2014 she played Vee Parker in Orange Is the New Black, winning a Critics' Choice Television Award, and appeared in Selma. Other films include Fast Color (2019) and Concrete Cowboy (2020).

Early training
Toussaint studied at Juilliard's drama division in Group 11 from 1978 to 1982. Her 1982 classmates included Megan Gallagher, Penny Johnson Jerald, Jack Kenny and Jack Stehlin, and she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
First role
After graduating, Toussaint started out as a Shakespearean actress, playing Hippolyta in Liviu Ciulei's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Guthrie Theater before moving into screen work.
Big break
Toussaint had her biggest and leading role in Any Day Now, the Lifetime network's first original television drama series, playing Rene Jackson, a successful African-American lawyer, alongside Annie Potts.
