Plot summary
Aisha left Senegal for New York City without documents, and her son Lamine, now six, has stayed in her cousin Mariatou's care for a year. She is taken on to look after Rose, Amy and Adam Hav's young daughter, and the Havs are a wealthy couple on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Aisha and Rose grow close while the parents' careers keep them from home, and Aisha begins a relationship with Malik, the doorman in their apartment building, whose grandmother Kathleen and son Bishop welcome her.
