Plot summary
Ellie is a sweet, naive teenager who adores the Swinging Sixties, its music and its clothes, and wants to become a fashion designer. Her mother, a designer too, killed herself when Ellie was small, and her grandmother brought her up. Ellie sometimes glimpses her mother's ghost in mirrors. She leaves the countryside near Redruth, Cornwall, for London to study fashion design, and finds it hard to make friends there, especially with Jocasta, the roommate who bullies her. Only John is kind. She rents a bedsit from Ms. Collins, an elderly landlady, and that night a vivid dream carries her back to the 1960s, where she watches Sandie, a confident blonde, ask about singing at the Café de Paris. Sandie takes up with Jack, a charming manager.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Last Night in Soho (2021)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Sam Mendes introduced Wright to screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who had spent five years tending bar at The Toucan in Soho. On the night of the 2016 Brexit vote the pair toured Soho's basement bars, and in one called Trisha's Wright pitched her the story.
- Wright wanted the 1960s scenes to be wordless dreams until Wilson-Cairns argued the audience had to fall in love with Sandie, and proposed her audition at a Soho nightclub called the Rialto; Wright knew at once that Sandie should sing Petula Clark's "Downtown".
- Wright noticed Anya Taylor-Joy when The Witch premiered at Sundance in 2015, where he sat on the US Dramatic Jury, and pitched her the film soon afterwards with the part of Eloise in mind; only later did he decide she should play Sandie.
- It was the last film for two actresses: Diana Rigg, who died shortly after production ended and with whom Wright said he was filming right up until the end, and Margaret Nolan, who died in October 2020.
