Plot summary
At Canterlot High, Sunset Shimmer has put her days as the school bully behind her, but most students keep away from her. Her only friends are Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy and Rarity, five girls who play together in a rock band called the Rainbooms. Playing their instruments unleashes magic left over from Twilight Sparkle's crown, giving the girls pony ears, tails and wings. A trio of new students, Adagio Dazzle, Aria Blaze and Sonata Dusk, call themselves the Dazzlings; their song sets the other students against one another, and the school's musical showcase becomes a contest between bands. Sunset's group is shielded by their magic, yet Principal Celestia and Vice Principal Luna dismiss their warning, so Sunset asks Twilight Sparkle for help through Princess Celestia's book.

- On the film's audio commentary, writer Meghan McCarthy revealed that Sunset Shimmer did not become the main character of Rainbow Rocks until the second draft of the script.
- Songwriter Daniel Ingram said Rainbow Rocks would feature 12 songs, the greatest number for a Friendship Is Magic episode or an Equestria Girls film up to that point, but only 11 made it into the film.
- Rarity's line "we forgive you for your past...ahem...booboos" was ad-libbed by Tabitha St. Germain, and the freestyle rap by Snips and Snails' counterparts was genuine freestyling by Lee Tockar and Richard Ian Cox, per the audio commentary.
