Plot summary
Vivo, a kinkajou, plays music in a Havana plaza alongside Andrés Hernández, his owner. A letter reaches Andrés from Marta Sandoval, the singer he once performed with, telling him she is leaving the stage. She invites him to Miami's Mambo Cabana, and he means to use a song he wrote for her to tell her what he feels. Vivo, content in Cuba, does not want to go. Andrés then dies in his sleep, and a funeral is held in the plaza. Rosa, his niece by marriage, and her daughter Gabi, ten years old, travel home to Key West, Florida. Vivo, sorry for holding back, hides in their luggage, determined that Marta will hear the song. Gabi discovers him and offers her help, and the two set out for Miami together.

- Lin-Manuel Miranda first pitched Vivo to DreamWorks Animation in 2010, after the success of his stage musical In the Heights; DreamWorks dropped the project in a 2015 restructuring, and Sony Pictures Animation revived and fast-tracked it in December 2016.
