Plot summary
Barbie Roberts of Malibu wants to be a Broadway star, so she signs up for a summer program at the Handler Arts Academy in New York City. A student from Brooklyn helps her with her luggage, and the custodian explains that the two have arrived a day early. The dormitory door bears the name Barbie Roberts, and the pair learn they share it. To keep things straight they take the nicknames Malibu and Brooklyn, and their shared love of music makes them fast friends as they explore the city. On the subway, Malibu spots a poster of the popstar Emmie, a singer Brooklyn says she knew as a child. The girls agree that fame will not come between them.
