Plot summary
Every four years, Canterlot High's team, the Wondercolts, face the undefeated Shadowbolts of Crystal Prep Academy in the Friendship Games, a contest of academics and sports. Sunset Shimmer watches her friends sprout pony ears, tails and wings whenever they play music, and she is asked to find the cause when Rainbow Dash changes at a pep rally. Crystal Prep's Twilight Sparkle studies the magic around Canterlot High and builds a device to detect and hold it. Principal Cinch threatens to revoke Twilight's Everton application unless she joins the games.

- The song "What More Is Out There?" was written as a duet for Crystal Prep's Twilight Sparkle and Canterlot High's Sunset Shimmer, but time constraints and the removal of a subplot about Sunset questioning whether she belonged to the parallel world or Equestria left it a solo for Twilight. The duet version survives as a deleted scene on the Blu-ray and DVD.
- Friendship Games was the first film in the Equestria Girls franchise not directed by Jayson Thiessen and written by Meghan McCarthy, and the only one with no involvement from McCarthy at all; the pair were busy on the 2017 theatrical My Little Pony feature film at the time.
