Plot summary
Félicie is an orphan in rural Brittany in the 1880s and dreams of becoming a ballerina, though she has no formal training. She runs away to Paris with Victor, a young inventor and her best friend, but they are soon separated. Victor takes a job in Gustave Eiffel's workshop. Félicie goes to the Paris Opera, where a guard catches her trespassing. A cleaner named Odette, who walks with a limp, rescues her and lets her stay. Odette cleans for the Opera and for Régine Le Haut, who owns a restaurant. While helping Odette clean, Félicie sees Régine's daughter Camille practicing ballet. Camille insults her and breaks the music box Félicie treasures by throwing it out a window. Félicie intercepts a letter that admits Camille to the Opera's ballet school and decides to take Camille's place to pursue her own dream.
