Plot summary
At San Pueblo University in San Diego, Dr. Kendall has spent years teaching Jack, a three-year-old chimpanzee, to communicate through sign language. When the research loses its funding, Jack is to be sent back to a California nature preserve, but he falls asleep on the train and arrives in Nelson, British Columbia, where the Westover family has just moved. Steven, once the top scorer on his high school hockey team, has joined the local junior B Nuggets and is startled by the rough play and by how little his teammates mind their defeats. Tara, Steven's sister, is deaf and has trouble fitting in at her new school. Jack takes shelter in Tara's tree house, and Steven discovers that the chimpanzee can play hockey.
